Argentina: Two Climbers Die on Aconcagua
Published: January 9, 2009
Two climbers, an Italian and an Argentine guide, died when a storm trapped them just below the summit of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, the authorities said Thursday. Three other Italian alpinists survived and were rescued by a crew that recovered the bodies of their colleagues, according to Pietro Tombaccini, an Italian consular official in Mendoza. The five climbers had been stranded on the mountain, which rises to more than 22,800 feet, since Wednesday afternoon. A sixth climber, an Italian woman, descended earlier Wednesday and escaped the storm, the Italian Foreign Ministry said.
